Weather Update — September 28, 2026

Today is another stunner of a day on the Eastside, and I’m Noé from eastsideweather.com, here for MammothFM in the Eastern Sierra, coming atcha with your local weather report…

Our gusty weather will give way to a transient taste of winter to high elevations this Monday, as a weak trough brings in very light snow showers to higher elevations. As of now, we’re looking at snow levels between about 9-10 thousand feet, and most places will receive between no snow at all to a dusting while isolated higher areas receive up to an inch or maybe two inches. The bulk of this dusting looks to be along the Sierra Crest and to the south of Mammoth.

After this, the models do look keen to bring in a large ridging pattern out west, which means we could get quite warm and stay dry for quite a while. We’ll have to see just how long this lasts, but at the moment the models have this thing going out all the way to day 15 and beyond. Time will tell.

This ridge of high pressure may allow for increased activity of the Dome Fire, which is burning 30 miles west of Mammoth Lakes at over 4800 acres and now up to 30% containment. We’ll have to keep watching day by day for containment numbers and to see where the plume of smoke is aiming. As of now, it doesn’t appear we’ll see any major smoke for the next few days.

And now the forecast for this weekend:

In Mammoth Lakes and surrounding areas: Monday will feature a slight chance of rain and snow showers above 9,000 to 10,000 feet. It will be mostly sunny with a high near 54, an overnight low of 35, and gusty winds up to 30mph. Tuesday turns clearer and warmer, with highs reaching mid 60s and overnight lows of 40, with north wind gusting up to 20mph. By Wednesday, our warming is in full effect and expect highs in the low 70s for the rest of the week with lows generally in the mid 40s.

Down in the Owens Valley: On Monday, a chance of isolated showers. Mostly sunny with a high near 73, and an overnight low of 43. Gusty north winds. On Tuesday, sunny with a high of 82 warming to the high 80s the rest of the week, with overnight lows generally in the low 50s.
